Michael's Route into Law

What first sparked your interest in this career?

My interest in a Jersey legal career was first sparked during my work experience with Advocate Paul Nicholls in Jersey in November 2018. I was struck by the variety of matters he handled and impressed by the level of independence he enjoyed in his practice. This initial insight highlighted the breadth of the legal profession and inspired me to pursue a career in law myself.

What was your first role and what did you learn from it?

That work experience effectively marked my first real role in a legal environment. It quickly became apparent to me that adaptability was crucial, as no two days are ever quite the same and a legal career demands more than just technical knowledge – it also requires resilience and flexibility.

Which career move had the biggest impact on your development?

The most significant transition in my career came when I moved to Jersey to join Ogier’s training contract scheme. Having the opportunity to rotate through different departments not only broadened my understanding of the law beyond dispute resolution, but also exposed me to the high standards and expectations present at one of the world’s leading offshore law firms. Learning from talented colleagues in such an environment has been pivotal in shaping my development as a lawyer.

What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges I encountered was my first seat in investment funds. The technical complexity of the work, combined with the difference in working patterns from dispute resolution, was initially difficult to navigate. I overcame these obstacles by maintaining a positive attitude and remaining open to constructive feedback, which allowed me to adapt and improve.

What skills have been most valuable throughout your career?

Hard work and a positive attitude have proved to be the most valuable attributes throughout my career so far. I have also come to appreciate the importance of taking time to fully understand each task. While there is often pressure to complete work as quickly as possible, I have found that allowing yourself the time to deliver work to a high standard is essential for personal development and demonstrating your readiness to take on greater responsibility.

What does a typical day look like in your current role?

As an Associate in Ogier’s dispute resolution team, my day-to-day work involves progressing litigation, conducting research, drafting documents and analysing new facts and evidence from clients, opponents, and onshore lawyers within the wider legal team. Applying legal principles to new scenarios, and explaining my reasoning clearly and concisely, is a central part of my role.

Take ownership of your career: be proactive, look for opportunities to develop and always seek to learn from those around you.
