Following on from the success of our last event in Mombasa, we are partnering once again with CMS Kenya | Daly Inamdar Advocates to host an exclusive invite-only roundtable which will delve further into the topic of succession and governance in family businesses, this time exploring the role of the next generation or NextGen in East Africa’s family business landscape.

Family businesses in Africa contribute considerably to the continent’s economic prosperity. With the total individual wealth held in Africa expected to reach US$3.1 trillion by 2027, this wealth can be attributed, in part, to the next generation of family business owners.

Led by Jersey Finance’s Faizal Bhana, Director – Middle East, Africa and India, and Abdulhafeez Noorani, Partner, CMS Kenya | Daly Inamdar Advocates, guests will hear from a range of speakers with expertise in supporting East African family businesses and private clients, followed by a roundtable discussion moderated by Faizal and Collette Akwana, Partner, CMS Kenya | Daly Inamdar Advocates.

Faizal BhanaDirector – Middle East, Africa and India, Jersey Finance

Profile

Faizal is a UK qualified lawyer and for many years has worked and advised, and is a trusted advisor to institutions, corporates and families across the Middle East, Africa and India. Faizal specialises in banking and finance and has advised corporates, family offices and families including on their international investment and holding structures.

Abdulhafeez NooraniPartner, CMS Kenya | Daly Inamdar Advocates

Abdulhafeez is a Partner at CMS Kenya | Daly Inamdar Advocates. He is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a Certified Professional Mediator. He has over fifteen years’ experience advising clients in Corporate and Commercial transactions and Dispute Resolution. He is well respected by clients for his practical and concise approach to the giving of legal advice. His main practice areas are property acquisition and development, mergers and acquisitions, banking securities and finance, employment matters and general commercial transactions. He also handles civil litigation and arbitration in land, employment, marine cargo and P&I claims.

Abdulhafeez trained with Kaplan & Stratton, Advocates, Nairobi and then joined Inamdar & Inamdar, Advocates in Mombasa in 2006 where he become a Partner in 2009. Since the merger with Daly & Figgis Advocates in 2016, he has been the Managing Partner of the Firm’s Mombasa Office.

Collette AkwanaPartner, CMS Kenya | Daly Inamdar Advocates

Collette is a Partner at CMS Kenya | Daly Inamdar Advocates in the Dispute Resolution Department. She has specialised expertise in dispute resolution, having handled a blend of complex civil and commercial disputes. Her practice includes domestic and regional representation of parties before different courts, tribunals and other forums.

Collette’s expertise extends to data protection and she advises local and multi-national companies on the full spectrum of data protection issues arising from data protection legislation.

She is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over thirteen years of experience and a certified professional mediator, accredited by the Kenyan Judiciary.

Mohamed Shakeel Salyani Head of Islamic Banking Division, Craft Silicon

Dr. Mohamed Shakeel Salyani is a seasoned banking professional for 20 years with wide experience in Islamic banking for 16 years. During this period, he has worked with credit institutions in developing new shariah compliant credit facilities in leading banks in the country. His banking career initiated with Diamond Trust Bank and later First Community Bank, and Gulf African Bank Ltd, where his acumen for research and product development within Islamic Finance was sharpened. He has consulted for Acorn Investments Ltd for developing shariah compliant REITs and also RentCo Africa for Islamic Leasing products through his firm, Araf Consultants Ltd. Dr. Salyani is a part time lecturer at Moi University (School of Business). Today he consults for the Islamic Banking Division in Craft Silicon Ltd.

Frank MwitiEastern Africa Markets Leader, Ernst & Young LLP

Frank is the EY Parthenon and Eastern Africa Markets Leader responsible for leading the firm’s strategic growth in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Ethiopia in line with EY’s significant investment plan and growth ambitions. Frank has 20+ years of experience advising Investors, Shareholders, Boards, CEOs and Government Executives across Africa, UK, US, Europe and Russia on Strategy, M&A, Governance and Transformation. Prior to joining EY, he was CEO for an M&A and Advisory firm in London and has previously held Executive roles at Deutsche Bank, UBS Investment Bank and other top global firms in UK and Africa. Frank holds Executive Management qualifications on Strategy from MIT, is a CPA and holds a Bachelor of Law degree.

Abdul Bagha Managing Partner, Innovus Risk & Advisory LLP

Over 25 years of experience in financial advisory, including audit and assurance services covering both internal and external audit, and corporate finance, risk advisory and business consulting. Worked for four years at PKF Kenya LLP, Nairobi from 2002 to 2006, and 11 years at RSM Eastern Africa, from 2006 to 2017, rising to the position of Partner Designate in charge of Mombasa office. Financial Controller of Mombasa Maize Millers Group, in charge of the entire finance function of the Group, including financial management and control, financial strategy, tax planning and advisory for the group for four years from 2017 to 2021. Experience in development of technical material having been involved in development of the ICPAK and HLB International’s Audit Manuals, development of IFRS compliant financial statements for banks and insurance companies, and financial and operational policies and procedures manuals. Extensive experience providing tax advisory services including income tax.

Rahab NderuExecutive Director, Lotus Hotel

Rahab Nderu is an entrepreneur, arts and culture activist as well as an environmental champion residing in Mombasa. Rahab relocated from corporate employment in Nairobi to head back to her hometown of Mombasa to manage a family hospitality business that has been in operations for over 50 years. With her experience in Marketing and Hospitality Operations, she continues to navigate the modern business challenges that face the hospitality sector post the pandemic. Rahab is also committed to her community development consultancy and is currently involved in uplifting home-based child care in informal settlements through qualitative support plans. Rahab has worked closely with the County Government of Mombasa, coordinating some of the County’s Creative Economy projects and founded a collective art organization dubbed Art & Soul to provide a platform for the youth in enhancing public art. She also serves as a board member at the Environmental Trust of Kenya, an environmental conservation.
